MissionswerkstattMissionswerkstatt: a workshop format from mission to action

From workshop method to movement: people get started without waiting for permission.

The Missionswerkstatt takes people from a personal mission to concrete room for action. Afterwards they connect in the Missionswerkstatt community and find allies, and individual missions grow into thematic teams. A project of D2030 e.V., developed by Jonas Drechsel and Johannes Wirz, freely available as a method handbook.

Why the Missionswerkstatt exists

Many organisations have well-connected, well-informed members. Yet the hoped-for activation doesn't happen, because the link between personal values and concrete ways to act is missing. People want to do something meaningful. The polycrisis paralyses them.

What the Missionswerkstatt aims for by 2030

By 2030 the Missionswerkstatt wants to mobilise more than 2,000 people shaping transformation, with workshops that scale, a train-the-trainer network and thematic mission communities. It all started in 2023 with the scenario project D2045 “Missionen für Deutschland” (missions for Germany).

Who is the Missionswerkstatt for?

For foundations, alliances, associations, clubs, social impact companies, non-profits and start-up centres that want to get their community moving or give it focus. As the host, you send the invitations and suggest the venue. If you want to facilitate yourself, you join through the onboarding.

Three phases in four hours

Seek
Connect personal topics with desirable futures, sparked by scenarios from interdisciplinary futures work.
Strengthen
Participants interview each other about their ideas and share their positive visions with the group.
Realise
Put vision and mission into words, with coaching up to the first concrete steps.

Vision and mission of the Missionswerkstatt

Vision
In five years, more and more mission teams from our workshops are carrying out projects you could almost call real-utopian. We see a culture of missions emerging beyond our project.
Mission
As a project, we focus on running workshops in which individuals find their mission. We accompany as many of them as possible until they come together in self-organised thematic teams. We make the first real-utopian results visible, and also the limits they run into along the way.
Values
Trust, doing before brooding, political independence, sustainability, openness to the world and a focus on the we.
Tomorrow
We learn why who isn't buying, whether the project lead can handle sales personally, and how welcoming and accompanying people works better in the transition from the workshop to the community. We talk to 200 contacts in a three-question survey (hook: Saxony-Anhalt) and at our own Futures Lounge on the energy transition in mid-2027. We start with the very first tests with thematic communities, five to seven funding applications and a sales video of ten to fifteen minutes.
The Goldener Kreisel
On the worksheet for your own mission, the vision comes first, one sentence in one breath. Then comes the mission as the answer to how that is supposed to work. Tomorrow captures the first two or three steps. Geels, Mazzucato and Sinek provide the theoretical background.

A method I developed

Missionswerkstatt

In the workshop, people put their personal mission into words. It becomes a bridge between their own values and the structures of an organisation.
