Future workshop

The future workshop is a participatory format by Robert Jungk in three phases: critique, utopia, implementation. In it, the people affected become experts on their own future. They collect what bothers them, sketch wishes without self-censorship and plan first steps. The format works equally well for neighbourhoods, teams and organisations.

Foundational is the book “Zukunftswerkstätten” (future workshops) by Robert Jungk and Norbert R. Müllert (1981).

The Missionswerkstatt was co-developed by Jonas Drechsel as a further development of the future workshop, with a focus on the personal mission. With BUNDjugend, a future workshop explored a more sufficient society, and in Kassel in 2026 he designed “Kulturorte im Übermorgen” (cultural venues the day after tomorrow).

Guiding questions

  • What bothers you most today?
  • What would it look like if anything were possible?
  • Which part of it will you put into practice first?
